敷地は住宅街にある1000㎡程の土地に、二世帯の住宅と親族が集まる客間を計画した。住宅に限らず建築は屋内外の境界ラインが支配的で、それに代わる境界があれば生活を豊かにできるのではないかと考えた。大きな敷地にRC壁に囲まれた“囲い”のようなものをぱらぱらと配し、その内外をウチソトと呼ぼう。“囲い”のウチは都市の中で囲まれる安心感を持ちながらも、屋内とは限らない。例えば屋外のウチは自転車置場や勝手口脇のゴミ置場、風呂外の湯冷まし場になり、生活の中で積極的な外部利用を促す。同様に“囲い”のソトは屋外に限らず、“囲い”のソトに配されたリビングは屋内にありながら街を歩くようなおおらかさを持つ。“囲い”は時に、塀のような都市と住宅の緩衝帯にもなり、二世帯とは割り切れない8人家族の中で独立した家のような設えもつくる。木造の構造の中で“囲い”はRCでつくり、横力を負担すると同時に、その硬さが住空間に新しい境界を付け加えようとしている。

We designed a duplex house with a reception room for relatives. Typified by the sliding glass door, buildings are generally designed in such a way that the boundaries between their inside and outside dominate, and we sensed the need for a different kind of boundary.
Therefore, we created a new type of boundary called “kakoi,” a kind of enclosure surrounded by RC walls, and called the spaces inside and outside of these enclosures “uchi” and “soto.” The outside uchi spaces function as play spaces for children, and as an additional bathing area, promoting active outdoor living and providing a feeling of security in being enclosed. The indoor soto spaces function as spacious living rooms that give the impression of walking down a street. We hope that this new form of boundary leads to the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor living.
